  • Use of Silencers Soon to be Legal in Washington State

    Christine Gregoire gave the legislature an additional thirty days- starting April 22nd- to produce a two-year state budget and it looks like the law makers finally have a budget after a special session that looked like it was about to go into another overtime. Gov. Gregoire signed three gun bills into law passed by lawmakers during the regular session. HB 1016 allows use of suppressors. Known as silencers, suppressors are common in many other states. Federal law requires some red tape with the BATFE, however. European gun enthusiasts have used silencers for years because it eliminates many of the complaints about noise that plague gun ranges.     Congressman Adam Smith really understands deficit spending well. He is making the rounds with pie charts, polls and statistics explaining how reducing the deficit needs a “constituency”, kind of like big oil, lower taxes or gay rights, for example. The last time there was supposedly a constituency for deficit reduction (according to Smith) was when Ross Perot was on the campaign trail! (more…)

    Amended LEOSA Empowers Retired Law Enforcement

    LEOSA has been around for about seven years now; most officers across many states aren’t very familiar with the law. Despite the 2010 amendments, understanding the LEOSA and related laws seems to be subject to some interpretation but we have received some help from a federal law enforcement officer who is also a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and NRA instructor. He keeps himself very well versed in Washington State and federal laws that relate to LEOSA.

    Active and retired LEOs should fully educate themselves on the firearm laws of any jurisdiction in which they are traveling and strive to always be in compliance with the various laws because their knowledge is what will ultimately protect them. We choose to carry concealed firearms for one purpose- to preserve life. The moment when the off-duty officer or retiree has to present that firearm and pull the trigger is critical because whether he was fully justified or not, those moments may land him in court explaining his actions. Things will be far more complicated if the court finds that the officer or retiree was in illegal possession of that firearm when he made the decision to deploy deadly force. (more…)

  • Preemption: Washington Cities Violate State Gun Law

    Attorneys for various municipalities around Washington State have issued legal opinions that RCW 9.41.290 “only applies to the regulation of firearms themselves” and “excludes regulations that only secondarily affect firearms… that do not embody a punitive regulation”. The Washington State Attorney General’s Office issued a legal opinion last week that thoroughly rebuts such opinions based on Cherry v Metro and another case that dealt with certain narrow issues applied to a venue for a gun show leased from the City of Sequim, washington.   • Federal Way School Board Looks at Costs of Expanded JROTC Program

    Federal Way presently has two high schools that offer the Junior Air Force ROTC program. According to Major Barry Jones some states, like Idaho, are on a waiting list for Air Force Junior ROTC. The Marine Corps, Army and Navy also have ROTC programs.

    At the School Board meeting on November 9, 2010, I suggested on behalf of myself and some other concerned citizens that we have other high schools that can benefit from the Junior ROTC program. According to my sources, there is a cost for the District of approximately $100,000.00 per year per school. This is based on $50,000.00 each for the two instructors needed at each school. The JROTC program is proven to motivate students to achieve academic excellence. (more…)

  • My Days in the Underground, Sixties Militants & How to Foment Anarchy

    On April 8th, the Tacoma News Tribune published an editorial about alleged death threats against Sen. Patty Murray. The editors stated, “In the furious arguments over health care reform, legitimate conservatives have sometimes been accused of fomenting violence with bitter and angry rhetoric”.

    The next day in Olympia, almost three-dozen leftists dressed in black, wearing masks and calling themselves anarchists chanted obscenities at law enforcement officers. The anarchists attacked a newspaper photographer, spray-painted buildings, broke windows and threw newspaper boxes into the street. Police arrested 29 leftists. Two officers were hit – one in the head and one in the groin. (more…)

    Our former Federal Way Municipal Court Judge wrote a letter to the editor about a column I wrote dealing with the subject of guns and domestic violence victims in which he cited certain statistical studies. See Domestic Violence, Guns & Federal Way’s Mayoral Campaigns.

    One study, published in 1993 in the New England Journal of Medicine, claims that “having a gun in the home makes it three times more likely that you or someone you care about will be murdered by a family member or intimate partner.” (more…)

  • Executive Privilege & Progressive Race-Baiting

    I recently wrote in my Federal Way Mirror column, The Firearms Lawyer, that Federal Way’s Tea Party leader is a lady named Robin Caldwell- an African-American. Robin- also a member of our Federal Way GOP precinct organization- is first of all an American who happens to be a mixture of African, native-American and European ancestry. She is also a conservative libertarian. Despite my affiliation with Robin, however, the usual suspects called me a right wing demagouge (sic) and labeled my description of recent events as racist, ignorant editorializing masquerading as fact!
