From one of our readers:
While I certainly have the ability to be an ass, I try not to employ it at all times. As for conceit, that word implies a level of vanity which I definitely lack. Perhaps you meant arrogance, which was given away freely on Wednesdays at the HUB during my years at the UW. It was much more nutritious and satisfying than the crappy yakisoba that they also served.
Yes, I’m aware of the fall of Constantinople in 1453….also the sieges of Vienna in 1683 and 1500 something. Constantinople also fell, in 1204, I believe, to a Crusader army…..so. I’m not particularly bothered by the barbarisms of history….we humans have been, and continue to be, pretty shitty to our fellow travellers on this rock in space. We’ve always found a way to classify some group as an “Other", an “Outsider", as the ENEMY, whether by dialect and style of dress, skin color, nationality, religion or ideology…..it doesn’t seem to matter WHY we want to hate, we always seem to come up with a reason.
As far as Obama is concerned, he will be a friend to Israel, though not to Likud. It will be refreshing to have a Realist back in power, rather than some incurious MBA frat boy who insulated himself with Trotskyists, raving Talibaptists, not to mention that over-educated twit that ran the DOD for far too many years. Yes, the ignorati will always be with us, but I am not one of them. The faschisi will also always be with us……I hope you’re not one of them.
p.s. Yes, I’m a lifelong lefty……quite a bit left of the Dems on most issues, but not all. In earlier times I’ve been a hunter….birds mostly, don’t care for the taste of venison. I’m sure I’ll do more, and hope to get a boar one day. As a fan of John Locke, and by extention, the 2nd Amendment, I do appreciate your efforts there. Firearms are a tool, not an act, besides, as a lefty, it would be suicide if only conservatives, criminals, and especially conservative criminals had ALL the cool shit ;-)
I agree 100% that it’s up to each of us as individuals to be prepared to defend ourselves and our homes. Too many people have come to expect others to do that for us…that’s why most will sacrifice 100lbs of freedom for 1 extra ounce of security.
We have just been hit by 3 consecutive typhoons the past 4 weeks. We had experienced the worst floods, landslides and not to mention the loss of loved ones. Disaster preparedness should be modified and developed for us to be more capable of overcoming natural calamities. Disaster preparedness should be changed to Risk Management and Disaster Preparedness, or something like that. This shoud include the steps that the government will be taking after the calamity — proper budget, proper facilities, proper evacuation and enough supplies including food should be taken into consideration.
Very detailed article
I agree it is not If it is when
Human nature dictates the world shall never really live in total peace Until we are confronted by a greater enemy than ourselves (which may or may not ever happen)
We can not stop all crime we can not stop all terrorists I think you are right that we all need to be prepared to protect our own space, our home, our own street, and be abel to come to the aid of the police, firemen, national guard if the situation calls for it, anyway, I am proud to be an American…
Freedom has a price. For free speech the price is political dissent like flag burning, for freedom of religion you have to tolerate beliefs that differ from the masses. The right to assemble means that the nazis and clan can assemble too. The founding fathers felt that to protect these freedoms the population had to be armed. The price to protect freedom is sometimes tragic, like when a crime is committed with a gun. Reasonable laws can help limit these occurrences.
